Adams Hooper constructed this solid brick home in 1855 in the simplified Greek Revival/I House style popular in the mid 19th century in Indiana. Hooper was a devoted public servant holding numerous posts over his lifetime including Indiana State representative, County Auditor, and Indiana State Senator. He was prominent in the promotion of education in the area.

The structure is reputed to be oldest brick structure remaining in Columbia City and retains a high degree of exterior integrity. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Columbia City National Register District.

Located one block to the courthouse/courthouse square, the property would make an ideal single family residence. It may be possible to utilize the property for a low traffic office such as attorney's with a variance. Indiana offers a Historic Residential Rehabilitation Tax Credit if the property is utilized as a single family residence. If the property is utilized for commercial purposes such as an office the Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credit would be available.

Columbia City is located in northeastern Indiana. It is 20 miles to Fort Wayne, Indiana, which has a regional airport with connections worldwide. Drive times to other larger cities include 1 1/2 hours to South Bend, 2 1/2 hours to Indianapolis, and 3 hours to Chicago.

The structure was threatened with demolition when it was saved through a partnership between People Preserving History of Columbia City and Indiana Landmarks. The house has undergone an extensive exterior rehabilitation including:

  • Repair of foundation
  • Exterior brick pointing
  • Rehabilitation of historic windows and front door/sidelights
  • Repair and completion of exterior trim on rear wing
  • New front stoop and entry porch at front door
  • New landscaping
  • New front sidewalk
  • Exterior paint
  • New roof in 2007

The house contains approximately 1,800 square feet on two floors and wing. Interior renovation work has begun and is complete through drywall. The current owners are unclear as to the extent and scope of interior mechanical, electrical or plumbing work completed. Prospective buyers should plan on complete interior rehabilitation. There is no heating system currently the house. The property is serviced by city water and sewer.

Preservation covenants are attached to the property which require approval of any exterior work. An addition would be allowed, pending design approval and securing any necessary variances/approvals from the City of Columbia City.
