This classic building is located 45 minutes from Indianapolis International Airport and less than 30 minutes to Bloomington Indiana, home of Indiana University. Completed in 1867 it served for over 100 years as the banking center for Gosport and was the only bank in the area to keep its doors open throughout the Great Depression. In more recent times it has served as an insurance office, a library and an art gallery. It is currently used as a residence.
The elegant main floor features a spacious main hall with 15-foot ceiling and has recently had the additions of a small kitchen and a full bath and laundry. One of the highlights is the original vault and its rugged entry door. Soaring 10-foot windows allow amazing sky views. These windows were replaced to make the space more comfortable but the original glass windows are available. Upstairs is a modern bath and a half penthouse with a large deck and a nice view of some of Gosport's historic homes. The penthouse, added to the building in 2007, has a full kitchen.
The basement is quite usable and just a few steps below street level. Its main room was an art gallery in the 2010s and has served as a kindergarten and a meeting place for the Lions club. In addition to the main room there is a bonus room that has been a bedroom, an aquarium room and a "man cave", a furnace room/workshop and yet another vault. Up a level but separated from the main level is a half bath and industrial sink.
Gosport is a small town just outside the Indy metro known locally for its annual "Lazy Days" festival each August. A grocery store, post office, bank, bakery and diner are all located immediately next to or across from this building.
